Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has released the Notice of Race and opened online registration for the Volvo Hong Kong to Hainan Race 2024, which starts on November 14.

The Race takes participants on a 390 nautical mile, historically downwind passage to Sanya on the southern Chinese island of Hainan. Known as the “Hawaii of the East”, Sanya is a great vacation destination and a famous hub for yacht tourism in Asia. In 2022, a free passage policy was introduced between the Hainan Special Economic Zone and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, allowing Hong Kong sailors to use their Hong Kong license to operate their yacht for recreation or sport in Hainan. The 21-day time limit for Hong Kong yachts operating in Hainan has also been lifted.

2024 marks the 14th edition of the Race which was founded in 1997 and the first event took place on December 27 of that year; is included as part of the celebration of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China. Similarly, the launch from Macau in 1999 was part of China’s celebrations commemorating the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region. The Hainan Race has been held biennially since 2012, with the race schedule interrupted by Covid after the 2018 edition.

The starting line will be in front of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Kellett Island Clubhouse on November 14 with the starting signal sounding at 11.20am. Once in Hainan, participating yachts can take part in the Round Hainan Regatta.
